TAMPA From washing cars to getting a haircut to donating Delta SkyMiles, there are multiple ways Bay area residents can help in Hurricane Katrina relief efforts this weekend.

Local businesses and nonprofit organizations are planning events today and in the weeks to come to collect donations. Private citizens also are dreaming up ways to raise money.

St. Petersburg resident Scott Palacheck was brainstorming with friends one morning and decided on a car wash today to raise money for the American Red Cross.

The car wash will be at 845 Fourth St. N. in St. Petersburg.

Barbara Schlappig, owner of Salon At The Walk in Tampa, is keeping her salon open on Sunday

. She said her hairstylists wondered what they could do to help, so they volunteered to work seven days this week.

Proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross.

Schlappig hopes her salon, at 18059 Highwoods Preserve Parkway, will raise at least $2,000.

Rehab and Healthcare Center of Tampa has started a campaign to collect items for personal-care kits that it is assembling.

Large corporations are waging campaigns to raise money. Raymond James Financial has donated $200,000 to the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

Sweetbay Supermarket and Kash n' Karry donated $250,000 to the American Red Cross.

Walter Industries Inc. has set up an employee matching fund, which has raised $50,000.

Rachel Marra, a receptionist for Love's Salon in Brandon, said her shop is donating proceeds from haircuts to hurricane relief.

"This is the least we can do, this could have been us," Marra said.
